The Star Who Prizes Privacy Rather Than Publicity!
Mary Tyler Moore, who insists on being called “Mrs. Tinker” in private life, is comfortable only in two situations; when she’s working or when she’s home with her husband, producer Grant Tinker. “Hardly anybody knows her,” confides former co-star Cloris Leachman. “She’s very private.” Adds another former costar, Ted Knight, “Mary and Grant are not party seekers, goers or givers. They are very private people. They are sane and sensible, and not carried away by the razzle-dazzle of Hollywood.”
Mary and Doris Day both adore animals and often speak out openly tor better animal care and urge protection of pets.
Grant and Mary live in a simple home in Bel Air, where even their neighbors have hardly exchanged a word with them. Their socializing is almost nonexistent. Mary, a diabetic, does work for that cause, and the Tinkers now and then attend an award dinner. The rest of the time, Grant manages MTM Enterprises, and Mary either rehearses or takes her daily singing, dancing and exercise program.
Both married once before, Mary and Grant have a close-to-ideal 15-year-long marriage. They live very quietly.
Except for a brief separation 4 years ago, Mary and Grant have been happily married for 15 years. Raves producer Norman Lear about them: “I’ve always believed that husbands and wives influence each other, and you see it in those two. They are terrific.” Both want very much to succeed in business, but their happiness comes first. They’re working toward joy!
