“Overnight Successes” Who Worked For Years To Get To The Top!
Stockard Channing is so bubbly and eager to please that it’s hard to place her in the elegant background she grew up in—an apartment on Park Avenue, exclusive finishing schools and a degree from Radcliffe. Stockard acknowledges that the trust fund her stockbroker dad left her as a teen enabled her to live more easily than others, but her determination to build an acting career was something that no dollar bill could finance for her. Stockard, who’s been married three times (“I kept trying,”) is over 30, but she usually plays younger women—like the tough-talking Rizzo in the film Grease. “I’ve been there,” explains the actress. “I remember what it’s like to be that age, and I play it.” Stockard is currently the star of Just Friends on t.v., and is happily wed to screen writer David Debbin. Stockard has done movies and plays prior to her new series and, although flush with pride and happiness, still remembers “the time when I was constantly the girl who almost got the job.”
