SOMETIME IN DECEMBER SANDRA DEE and Bobby Darin hope to be blessed with a baby. Sandra knows how her husband lived, how he had to literally punch himself up to the top. How he lived in poor neighborhoods, didn’t eat or dress as well as the others. How hard it was to get an education and work after school. How, even though he wanted to go to college, he wasn’t able because of the family’s financial circumstances.

“I don’t want that kind of baby. I want my baby not to have to fight for anything. I want my boy or girl to always have all a child should have, and not to have to fight for their rights.

“I know what fighting all his life did to Bobby. He walked around for years with a chip on his shoulder. Each time someone did something nice for him he asked the same question—’what’s their angle.’

“Since, my husband has learned that people do nice things without angles, that just because they give you something is not a sign that they want something in return.

“He’s lucky. Many boys and girls never learn that—they never have the chance.

“My heart goes out to them and to the many babies that will be born who will have to fight their way to the top. I hope every one of them win.”
